Development and Communications Intern

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) was formed in 1990 by national, regional, and local organizations to develop and harness the collective energies of community reinvestment organizations from across the country to increase the flow of private capital into traditionally underserved communities. NCRC has grown to an association of more than 600 community-based organizations that promote access to basic banking services including credit and savings, to create and sustain affordable housing, job development and vibrant communities for America’s working families.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The intern supports fundraising and communications strategies for the organization, which may include research, writing and distribution. The intern believes in the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s (NCRC) mission, is a high-energy and creative team player, and has superb relationship building and organizational skills. Our interns do substantive work and get exposed to a range of issues, including fair housing and fair lending, grassroots organizing and advocacy, community and economic development, and workforce development.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Depending on hours per week available, length of service, organizational priorities, and candidate talents)

Development:

  • Research foundations and government agencies to identify grant opportunities
  • Compile information from different sources to build an outreach list of current and prospective donors and foundations
  • Support streamlined communication to current and prospective donors
  • Update funding database
  • Maintain filing system
  • Proof grant proposals and correspondences
  • Liaise between Communications and Development departments to ensure consistent messaging
  • Support fundraising processes as needed

Communications:

  • Research and draft a variety of written content (fact sheets, press releases, text for web pages or social networking sites, blog posts, op-eds, letters to newspaper editors).
  • Monitor and distribute articles in print, TV, radio and new media
  • Assist with media, blogger and online outreach
  • Build and update media contact lists.
  • Produce multimedia content, including photos and videos.
  • Attend and help with logistics for various meetings and events.
  • Make routine postings to Facebook, Twitter and blogs.
  • Attend and take notes for congressional hearings on Capitol Hill
  • Distribute press release templates, sample op-ed and Letters to the Editor for use in local communities.
  • Support creation and distribution of program-specific and organization-wide newsletters
  • Perform other communications functions as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrolled in college or as a graduate student; or experience in the fundraising, communications, or legislative campaign fields
  • Some experience in the areas of work helpful.

  • High attention to detail.
  • High initiative and proactive leadership.
  • Must be outgoing, enthusiastic, positive, love to interact and network with people and organizations, and able to build constructive and effective relationships.
  • Strong writing, oral, research and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and databases.
