Civil rights icon and long-time Congressman from Georgia, Rep. John Lewis, lost his battle against pancreatic cancer on July 17.
Jesse Van Tol, CEO of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, made the following statement:
“We mourn the loss of John Lewis, and offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and admirers. We were fortunate to be among John’s friends, and will always be grateful for that relationship and the wisdom he bestowed upon us. Above all, he stood for decency. He challenged injustice and inequality throughout his life.
“America lost a great leader during a time where leadership seems to be lacking. John’s determination to make ‘good trouble’ opened so many doors to get us where we are today, and while there is still much work to do in the fight for racial and economic justice, we are better positioned to keep pushing forward because of him.
“Thank you for your dedication and persistence. Thank you for your leadership. May you rest in power.”
