Session Title: Can we Preserve Affordable Housing in Gentrifying Neighborhoods?
As cities increasingly gentrify, what is being done to preserve housing both renters and homeowners can afford? The challenges facing traditionally lower-income communities and families continue to depress homeownership rates, particularly for persons of color. Affordable housing developers are competing against profit-driven investors aggressively buying properties in low-to-moderate income communities, making it even harder for families in these communities to purchase homes and access the wealth-building opportunities homeownership provides. This panel will present strategies to close this gap as well as opportunities to create more programs that promote affordable homeownership in your community.
